Aleda Gagarin
29th Council District - Queens
Aleda Gagarin is running for New York City Council from District 29 — Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Rego Park, and Richmond Hill — because NYC’s future hangs in the balance. As we battle unprecedented challenges in public health, housing, schools, policing, transportation, climate change, the collapse of so many key industries that sustain our families, and the exodus of half a million New Yorkers (and counting) since March, we cannot afford timid steps or half measures.
Just when we need it, the 2021 elections will give New Yorkers a once-in-a-generation chance to replace failed leaders who have left us defenseless during a pandemic and ignored rising demands for economic and social justice, and elect a new City Council that will hold our next mayor accountable. A proven leader, Aleda recognizes that today’s crises require bold vision, strategic collaboration, and community building. As a Councilmember, Aleda will bring her fierce advocacy and expertise to secure the thriving and just future all New Yorkers deserve.
Aleda was asked by her neighbors to run for Council because of her deep sense of community and unwavering belief that all people have the same fundamental rights. She believes all work has value and all wages should be livable. She'll fight to ensure that all New Yorkers have quality education, healthcare, and housing, a just future beyond prisons, and an economy that leaves no one suffering on the margins.
Aleda is a 15-year Kew Gardens resident who has dedicated her career to solving problems, advocating for resources, making connections, and challenging power. A proud CUNY graduate, she earned a Master’s in Urban Planning from Hunter College focused on community advocacy and a B.A. in International Service from American University in Washington, D.C. Aleda is a queer mom, youth coach, activist, and nonprofit leader who lives with her husband Mel, their three children (and a doggo named Chewbacca).
